Has anyone here ever heard of Dubstep? I've heard that it is a new genre that is really popular in California. I listened to some samples and found that it sounded more like a jungle/hip-hop fusion than anything I would desribe as "dub." The Rza meets the Chemical Brothers.

The dubstep I have heard has been amazing. It really caught my attention and has me hunting for more. Additech has a decent selection on vinyl and downloads.

I'm feeling the Dubstep. it's got the Gronk.

Check into Kode 9 and anything on Hyperdub label. Lots of juicy 10"
find Digital Mystikz Anti-war 12" on DMZ label.
Dub Police label puts out wik tunes. my fav so far is L-Wiz: Girlfriend 12".
Right now I'm in love with the new Pinch 12" Qwalli on Planet Mu.

and some CD comps to consider: Grime 2 on Rephlex, the Dubstep Allstars comps on Tempa,

This sound had been evolving for the last 2 or 3 years. Some dubstep is killer and considering its a relatively new style there's a lot of moods it fits in with [some is heavy, edgy, agro, some is trippy, chillin, worldy, some is techy some is organic]. Like all scene specific genres inevitably there's going to be a few formulaic duds, but right now the hit to miss ratio is pretty high. it's been carving a pretty tidy hole in my wallet.

I'm also excited that the best shit is still only available on vinyl! WOOOO! keeps the DJ's in busness. I don't want to go all digital just yet.
Keep them thar basslines a wobblin'!
    YAR!
    HAR!!

This is still a relatively young genre and it's spreading fast and in lots of different directions. I'd say it definitely has it's roots in Drum & Bass and Breakbeat, more so than Dub. But it is the Dub aspects that make it what it is. Righteous!

Sounds like the stuff you heard may be more on the Grime side of the house rather than the Dubstep side. A quick and dirty differentiation between the two would be that if it has M.C's or DJ's toasting over the beats then it's probably Grime. If it's just destroyed your SubWoofer it's probably Dubstep.

Nice mix, covers a lot of styles.

Saying Dubstep has roots in DnB rather than Dub is confused. DnB has its roots in Dub. do a wikipedia search for a more informed history.

      Dub ==> Drum & Bass ==> DubStep

Seems like a logical progression to me.

Listen to it, drop out all the snare drum programming, drop out every other beat (going from 140bpm to 70bpm) and most Dn'B would pass for Dubstep. To my ears Dubstep already has many different subgenres. The Planet Mu stuff that is almost Industrial Music sounding, the Dubby stuff, The Breakbeatty stuff, the organic instrumentation stuff. I like the tracks with the Oofah wobbly Bass, that definitely has it's roots in Dn'B. Darkstep to Dubstep not such a great leap.

Dub on the other hand traditionally has Guitars, Echo Effects, Studio trickery and a decided lack of Synths and Drum Machines. The song formation is usually buildt around a traditional verse chorus verse format (as most Dub singles were originally backing tracks that had been fucked with by Engineers, Producers and Studio Wizards). That's how I remember it anyway, but I am old and my memory might be failing me. All the Crucial Dub came out many, many moons ago...

        Is that the progression?
        I thought it was
Dub --> Drum and Bass --> UK Garage --> Grime --> Dubstep
I most certainly could be wrong.

Nevertheless, Dubstep is most definitely on it's way even in Seattle. The Planet of the Drums show in Seattle this weekend has a dubstep room, there's a dubstep monthly and dopelabs is based here too.

There's some East Indian-esque dubstep I've heard that I lurrve.

                Boxcutter "Tauhid"

i think one of the nice things about dubstep is that it draws from many influences...it seems to me like there is no real direct chain of 1:1 causality for any musical genre, and nitpicking over what lead to what seems a bit like missing the point - obviously there are some chronological progressions (none of us would be anywhere without "scratch", the mad professor, or king tubby...) but by and large it is difficult to pin down who was influenced by what when...because anytime you are musically influenced by some group/genre/person/thing you are also being indirectly influenced by all the groups/genres/people/things that influenced them...

as desert vibe said, there's the glitchy/industrial-y stuff, the real dubby stuff, some real garage-y stuff, some more jungle/dnb-style stuff, definitely plenty of crossover from grime as well...and i would say each of those sub-genres seems to have a slightly different mix of the general influences that seem to be prevalent across the genre (e.g. 'proud lion' by vex'd is very industrial-y but also has some rasta vocals, skream tends to be very garagey/grimey IMO with less tracks coming through that are on the 'reggae' side, mrk1 obviously comes from the grime background, the search and destroy crew tends to be pretty much on the dnb tip to say nothing of crossovers like tech itch and juju...)

IMO they are all influencing each other as the sounds continue to evolve...and it just keeps getting more interesting :)

Imo i think this is due to the fact that you cant pin down the evolution of the sound yet, and that as a genre you have alot of people developing their own take on it, allowing for alot of experimentation.......which I love

          I thought it was

Dub --> Drum and Bass --> UK Garage --> Grime --> Dubstep

Chronologically, yes. But you left out Breakbeat. A lot of Skream!'s early stuff sounds like Breakbeat to me (version).

I just downloaded most of the Bingo Beats Catalog and you can hear the sound evolving in those tracks. I guess Bingo Beats and Tempa share offices, so probably a lot of cross polination going on there... Dubstep just reached waaaay back, a return to the source you might say.

Whatever, I'm loving it. Can't get enough.

Dub has been an influence on funk, rock, disco, hip hop, house, and techno even before it was mixed with breaks and became jungle which evolved into DnB. blah blah blah... My objection is to say that Dubstep is closer to darkstep than to Dub reggae - thats merely your taste. limiting your definition of dub to 70s roots dub is silly. this is the FUTURE dub tribe.

and for me, dubstep isnt evolving fast enough. im getting bored.

Genres and Subgenres... It's all music right?

Labeling it just helps in discussing it and I suppose in marketing it. I seem to remember Drum and Bass tracks coming out first and then all of a sudden from out of nowhere this giant Jungle scene appeared. Never one for Jungle or Garage (or Grime) myself. I've been really pleased that Drum and Bass has survived through it all and that there are still awesome tracks coming out by these artists. I'm not dissin' any styles here, if you like it, it's all good. I just prefer music without vocals. I got to a point where with almost any lyrics I feel as though I've heard this before. Music without vocals allows me to enjoy the music, without being directed what to think. To free my mind...

I don't really remember Breaks preceding those styles either, but then Breakbeat is one of those terms that seems to be way overused (like Techno or House) a lot of stuff gets called Breakbeat. It seems that there is a thread of "real" Breakbeat that manages to survive throughout it all (same with Techno and House). I guess some of these definitions evolve over time as well.

The real trick would be to ask the artists what influenced them. This is all pinhead/angels type stuff really. I mean was Benga listening to Hip-Hop and Dub? was Hatcha into Techno and Drum and Bass? How about Horsepower Productions and Digital Mystikz? You really need to ask them what their influences are. We can really only sit on the sidelines trainspotting right? Saying it sounds like this influence here and that influence there... But we've got to do something while we wait for the new releases. :)

dubstep may be closer to darkstep than it is to roots dub, but dubstep is also closer to roots dub than darkstep is i'd say (say it fast and that's where the silliness comes in) but you can definitely mix some dubstep in with some of what i'd consider 'future' dub pretty seamlessly - i've definitely done it around here and have heard sets by several other people that do as well...

Dubstep was invented in Croydon, UK. It is the only musical genre ever to be associated with Croydon. Amazingly, there are no Dubstep nights in Croydon because Croydon is full of bars that exist for morons to get very drunk in and any music is likely to be generic house music.

    I live in Croydon.
